How can my business benefit from the Workplace Charging Scheme?
Are you thinking about going electric?
With the increase of sales in Electric and Hybrid vehicles over recent years, and the Government’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions and achieve the Net Zero Carbon target by 2050, there has never been a better time to go electric.
We are an authorised installer under both the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) and the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS), meaning that our customers can receive government grants towards certain approved systems.
In this blog, we’ve rounded up the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions you’ve got about the Workplace Charging Scheme, the eligibility criteria and how it can greatly benefit your organisation:
What is the Workplace Charging Scheme?
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a scheme funded by the Government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles, the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) provides a grant for businesses to reduce the cost of having an EV chargepoint installed at their premises.
The Workplace Charging Scheme consists of a voucher which is valid for six months from the issue date.
Who is eligible for the Workplace Charging Scheme?
If you are a registered business or a charity located in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, you are entitled to claim the Workplace Charging Scheme. A total of £350 per socket is available, with businesses and organisations able to install up to a maximum of 40 sockets. As a result, businesses are entitled to a grant of up to £14,000 for their workplace.
In addition, your workplace needs to have a dedicated off-street parking for staff members or a company fleet suitable for chargepoint installations in order to claim the grant. You also cannot claim any grant for the existing charging points at your business premises.
How can the Workplace Charging Scheme improve your organisation?
Incorporating electric vehicles within your company fleet can come with some great benefits for both the employer and the employees. Besides decreasing your company’s fuel costs, you can reduce your carbon footprint and improve your sustainability levels.
With an electric charging point on your premises, you can attract more customers and help promote your business with your modern charging infrastructure.
When it comes to your employees, installing a chargepoint will be very easy and convenient for them. For pure EVs, there is also no road tax that you have to pay. In addition, it will also reduce the running costs of their vehicle and ultimately, enhance the social responsibility and help the fight against climate change.
Can I apply for the Workplace Charging Scheme if I work from home?
If your home address is your primary place of work and is listed on HMRC as your place of business, then you are eligible to claim the WCS grant. However, that will only work for the employer and you won’t be able to contribute towards the cost of installing chargepoint at your employee’s homes.
Instead, your employees can apply for the Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) and receive a grant up to £350 towards the installation of a chargepoint.
How do I prove my eligibility for the Workplace Charging Scheme?
You will need to provide photographic evidence of the dedicated parking for your staff or your fleet, as well as provide them with the:
- VAT Registration Number
- If you’re a charity, then you’ll need your certificate of registration to the Charity Commission
Do you need an electric car before applying for the Workplace Charging Scheme?
No, you don’t need to an electric car to apply for the grant. However, you will need to show your intentions to promote sustainability in your workplace and encourage EV driving amongst your staff.
